Your 4s Win a set of tyres

This section of NZ4WD magazine is a monthly feature, showcasing four wheel drives doing just about anything except rolling over or burning! We welcome previously unpublished submissions. We’re not only after action shots; scenic shots, with a 4WD in them somewhere, are also welcome.
What we consider to be the best photo in each issue will receive a GT Radial prize pack made up of clothing and/or other branded promotional items, varying from issue to issue. A panel will judge the monthly winners and, in the NZ4WD Annual issue, award a grand prize of a set of five GT Radial Savero 4x4 tyres. This contest is open to all readers who are not professional photographers. Photographs must have been taken by the person entering them, or have the photographer’s written permission. E-mail your digital (JPEG) images and a detailed caption to:
editor@nz4wd.co.nz Send your prints and a detailed caption to: Your4s with GT Radial, PO Box 65092, Mairangi Bay, North Shore City 0754. Be sure to include your postal address.
Guide to submitting digital photos
Increasingly, readers are submitting digital photographs for use in these pages. While some are of superb quality, many are marginally usable or unusable, because they aren’t up to reproduction quality. What’s good enough for posting on a web page will almost certainly not be good enough for reproduction on paper. Here are some guidelines.

The basics. As with any photo, there’s no substitute for an image that’s sharp – in focus and free of camera shake. It should be well-exposed.
Be selective. Please don’t e-mail a whole bunch of pictures – unless they are part of a series which, together, tell a story. Be selective. Send us your best shot. Sadly, we don’t have enough hours in the day to look through folders of photos in the hope that we might find the "right" one, nor do we want to tieup the e-mail by downloading them all.

Size and type. The ideal submission would be a beautiful 300dpi TIFF of 10Mb or more, sent to us on a CD. However, in the real world we’re more than happy with JPEGs (.jpg) at 72dpi and as close to 2240x1680 as you can get. High-end cameras will be able to do better, but 2240 suits our needs quite well.

Democracy rules. Digital photos have no advantage over conventional prints when we’re selecting a winner.
Two DONT’S. Do not send us photos embedded in Word documents. We will not use them. Do not send prints from digital images made on cheap inkjet printers on ordinary paper. The quality is just not good enough. However, , if you have a high-end inkjet capable of photo-quality prints on glossy paper, we’re happy to see them.
Good luck!

2010 Monthly Winners

February

Per Jacobsen of Mount Pleasant, Christchurch, writes: “This picture was taken as we were in a big rush to get out of the Clyde river, up from Erewhon station, or a branch of the Rangitata. We had horrible weather all day coming out from our hunting trip, and before I let my mate drive, I swam this crossing first with the camera in a waterproof bag! This made for quite an exciting crossing, and the car’s electrical system went dead for about five seconds after he got out of the water and then back to normal. Thank goodness for CRC spray! As it crossed the vehicle was gradually pushed to the side with the pressure from the river insane.”

March

Tony Hinz from Christchurch sent this photo of a trip up the Godley River with the Canterbury Recreational 4WD club. This is the lunch stop just below Red Stag hut  looking up towards the Godley Glacier. An awesome part of the South Island.

Jasen Marsden from XXX writes: “Great mag, just a story that I had to share... “There I was, having bought my very first copy of NZ4WD, and what do I see but some photos in the Your 4s section submitted by my cousin, Ole Loklindt, who I hadn’t seen in over 20 years! “What are the chances that he submitted photos that ended up in the very first copy of the mag I should buy plus the fact that he is into 4WDing and fishing which are two of my current interests, freaky!  “I have business dealings with his older brother so after a quick couple of emails we are planning a boys’ weekend away for some catching up, 4WDing and fishing!  “Here’s a picture for the Your 4s section I took last year of my 09 Jeep JK up the Ahuriri Valley, south of Ohau. “This is a very nice drive up real ‘Lord of the Rings’ country. Since this pic was taken the Jeep has had an Old Man Emu suspension lift, onboard air and a few more goodies to come.”

Here is a photo of William Woodford’s Nissan Safari rock climbing at Mavora. William is from Mossburn, Southland.

June
“Some pics of my surf trying its best to do a bit of surfing,” writes Russell Hewins of Wainuiomata, Lower Hutt, Wellington. “Me and a mate were having a play on the rocks on the Hutt River when my Surf got spun and pushed into deeper water. Luckily lucky another friend who I hadn’t seen in a long time was not far away and he winched me out, we
pulled the glow plugs out, and turned it over by hand, spitting water out of the bores, then used a wet vac with a small tube on it to get what was left.

July
Nikki Apse of Arrowtown has sent us this fish’s eye view of Tom Butler from Arthurs Pass driving his Land Rover across the Shotover River while on a goat hunting expedition.
