A young Kiwi taking it to the Aussies

Scott Mclaughlin, SvG, Murph, Jim Richards…and now there is another Kiwi dominating Aussie motorsport. Only this time, there’s not a hint of tarmac involved.

Boston Morgan-Horan and Will Haddock, in their Geiser RWD race truck, were second overall at the annual Finke Desert Race, the second round of the Aussie championship. In fact, they ‘coulda-woulda-shoulda’ won the event but for a flat tyre on the first day that saw them roll into Finke on three tyres and a wrecked rim.

Aussies Travis Robinson and Paul Currie took the win in their 4WD Mason truck.

Third were Hayden Bentley/Sam Bentley/Viv Coe in another 4WD Mason truck – more than twelve minutes behind Boston.

Ninety race cars and trucks were classified finishers; there were 66 DNFs. The Kiwi pair are right at the sharp end of the championship points battle. Hayden Bentley is probably Boston’s main title threat right now, because with back-to-back Finke wins, Travis Robinson is retiring from the sport, effective immediately. This is not cheap sport: those Mason trucks carry million-dollar price tags.

We’ve sorted our racing plans for the rest of the year too. The Giti Tyres Chev will race at the Nelson round of the national champs next month, then (of course) the Otago club short course round in August, and finish out the year with the Canterbury club’s double-events in September and October.

Nelson is a lovely event, run on rally-style roads in forests south-west of the city. A good fast course with a few traps for the unwary.

Otago’s event on Slim Slee’s farm is a must. It includes the biggest, most spectacular jump in the sport. Even the little buggies get some air. We’ve had the Giti truck two metres off the ground there, and it’s a long flight.

Canterbury’s short course at West Melton is great for spectators, and the two rounds there are usually a lot of fun.

We’re not in the running for the championship so will only do the short course at that last event; the enormous goolie rocks of the enduro course out in the forest at West Melton just do too much damage to the gear.
