What the heck is a Jimry?

News and General

This is called the Jimry apparently. A slightly disturbing mash-up of Suzuki’s cult Jimny 4WD and the company’s Every van.

Trading on the stunning success of the Jimny, it is a Japanese ‘Kei’ vehicle with some off-road ability and an overland camper vibe.

The grille and the headlights are genuine Jimny parts ensuring factory-spec quality. The front bumper is custom-made but it has a similar design to the Jimny while integrating the same honeycomb pattern on the central intake. Other custom parts are the front fenders and the tiny bonnet with a bulge on the cenrtr.

Under the bonnet is a tiny 660cc three-cylinder 12-valve gasoline engine producing anywhere between 36 and 47kW. Power is transmitted to the rear or all four wheels through a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission.

Kei car regulations make the Jimny and the Every compatible in terms of width. Given the huge difference in height and ground clearance though, things are not that simple, creating the need for custom parts.

Unsurprisingly, this is not a Suzuki creation, rather an aftermarket offering. But when a version with serious offroad ability costs around $22,000NZD, the Jimry is proving popular.
