The popular Urewera Safari, organised by Mahia Hunt in conjunction with East Coast 4WD Club, is to be held over Waitangi weekend from Friday February 3 to Monday February 6 2012. The sixth to be held, the Safari will cover country between the Urewera Ranges in the west, Mahia in the east, Gisborne in the north and the Napier/Taupo Road in the south. The aim is to travel across country as far as possible, subject to weather conditions, with safety being paramount. The Safari is designed as a family affair, with camping each night along the route, a chance to make new friends, see a unique and untrekked part of New Zealand, and enjoy local communities’ wonderful hospitality. As per past events the local communities will be offering breakfasts and evening meals at reasonable prices. Entries will be done in teams of three vehicles. If you don’t have a team enter anyway and a team will be made for you. Cost is $280 per vehicle with a non-refundable $50 deposit due by December 19, and the remainder by January 10. The event is limited to 115 vehicles, and tyres required are a more-aggressive type with at least 50 percent of the tread left. No dogs or firearms are allowed, but there will be fishing opportunities in lakes, rivers and the sea. Entry forms and payments should be made to J. Redshaw, 24/1228 Ada Street, Parkvale, Hastings 4122 (email janredshaw@xtra.co.nz).
