Prado taken to extremes - Arctic Trucks toughens Toyota’s new SUV

News and General

The new Prado is definitely a capable offering, both on and off the road.
For those looking for something a little more gnarly, renowned extreme mobility vehicle specialists Arctic Trucks (AT) has created an off-road-specific version.
The AT37 has been developed by Arctic Trucks’ International (Iceland) and UK divisions, together with Toyota Africa distributor, CFAO.
Built with OEM standards of fit, finish and functionality, the AT37 is a completely re-engineered yet perfectly daily drivable high-mobility vehicle.
Taking the name from its 37” tyres, the AT37 will be specified in most markets with a choice of either BFGoodrich’s All-Terrain T/A KO3 or Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 tyres mounted on Arctic Trucks’ ‘Heritage’ forged alloy wheels, which offer better strength to weight and feature a unique dual-valve design for greater flexibility to monitor and modulate tyre pressures.
Improved ‘suspension effect’ from the AT37’s taller, wider tyres is combined with a bespoke two-way adjustable performance suspension system, providing increased travel and a 40mm lift. Developed in partnership with Dakar-winning specialists, R53 Suspension, large diameter monotube dampers feature high tensile hard chrome steel shafts, enhanced sealing and matched springs with hydraulic bump stops.
To accommodate the significant increase in tyre size, Arctic Trucks has reprofiled the Land Cruiser’s frame, body, bodywork and drivetrain to balance maximum wheel/tyre and ground clearance with low centre of gravity. Combined with a wider track and extended wheelbase, this provides surprisingly comfortable, composed and direct on-road performance.
Arctic Trucks’ signature widebody flares incorporate a tyre pressure guide/central tyre inflation system.
Newly developed and contoured AT wheelarch flares provide protection from mud and stones.
New extruded aluminium extended profile side steps feature high-grip rubberised inserts and durable end caps.
At the rear truck features a 50mm multifunction receiver hitch for fitment of tow balls, winches, steps, seats, gear carriers, barbeques and much more.
If the AT37 looks a bit extreme for most Kiwi adventures, check our drive review of the local-market Prado Adventure on page 27.
