The world of auto recycling has been turned on its head these days compared to what many readers will remember from the past. The ToyComm team is looking to take a further step on that journey.
ToyComm has branches in Tauranga and Christchurch (these were originally the well-known Bayside 4x4 and Lineside businesses). Both were Toyota specialists covering primarily Hilux, Hiace and Land Cruiser models. They have now expanded a bit to include Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi Triton and Jeep Grand Cherokee models. They cover vehicles from 1990 to 2023.
The two branches have a combined staff of around 20 people. Tauranga dismantles vehicles and holds a large range of parts whilst Christchurch does the same along with having the rebuild team on site. They carry around 50,000 items in stock.
Part of their secret sauce is a sophisticated overseas software program that assists them in terms of what stock to buy, what parts to remove from the vehicle and what to rebuild based on previous demand and current stocks. They prefer buying in vehicles without major damage.
When a vehicle arrives, it receives a pre-dismantle inspection, the engine is cleaned and run and compressions are tested. Then the quick moving parts are removed (usually around 80 per cent of the parts) and the shell is stored in the yard for 6 to 12 months where they can be used for body cuts, panels and miscellaneous slower moving parts supply. All parts are photographed and coded with scannable barcodes assigned to keep track of them.
Items not being kept are sent for recycling, this will include steel, aluminium, wiring harnesses, batteries, catalytic convertors, tyres and oils.
All parts are inspected and tested to decide whether they go to stock or are sent to Christchurch to the rebuild team. If there is any possibility of a potential warranty issue around a recycled part it will be sent for rebuild instead. This includes engines, transmissions, transfer boxes, drive shafts, brake calipers and steering racks or boxes. Tauranga receives a steady supply of rebuilt items back to hold in stock. This becomes self-sustaining as rebuilt items are usually supplied on an exchange basis generating further stock to be rebuilt.
