We test a set of ARBs new OME BP-51 shock absorbers fitted to a Toyota FJ Cruiser.

Imagine a cost-effective, fully adjustable set of bolt-in bypass-style shock absorbers purpose-built for your truck.

ARB did and came up with an all-new range of Old Man Emu (OME) BP-51 (Bypass 51mm diameter bore) coilovers.

While most conventional shock absorbers only generate damping based on fluid flowing through the piston, BP-51 units also offer the fluid an alternative path from one chamber to the other, around the piston in the form of ‘bypass’ (hence the name) passages.

It is this feature that allows the units to literally offer the best of both worlds, a comfortable ride under normal driving conditions, and a more controlled, as well as fine-tune adjustable ride when the going gets tougher.

We put a set fitted to an FJ Cruiser owned by Auckland 4x4’s Richard Brooks and headed out to Duncan Munro’s farm in south-east Auckland to put them through their paces.

The resulting video gives you an idea of the difference the BP-51s make on and off the road.

Enjoy!
